Again, it is not ashamed to admit that ones is facing depression, every single human being is facing ups and down in life.
Depressive thoughts like “why do anything if nothing feels good or even works out?” is the first sign of depression. People in depression always feels pessimistic, life appears as grey, negative bored and “there is nothing in the future”.
There are three stages of depression:
- In short term, one may be seeking isolation, like staying at home or at bed most of the time.
- In medium term, one may feel “nothing is important” and choose not to pursue opportunities while
- In long term, work performance may deteriorate, could not finish school, in a ruined relationship or even marriage
Depression is easier to be recognizing by own selves as habits may change in a person and usually depressive symptoms is extremely difficult to be seen by others.

Effects on thoughts and feelings:
- having negative thoughts especially in the morning
- pessimistic, having bleak view of the future
- feeling emotional , often crying
- poor concentration, having trouble making decision
- poor motivation
- lose of interest in activity that previously enjoy
- feeling guilt and worthlessness, self0esteem lowered
- anxiety (worry more, symptoms in anticipation of real and imagined danger)
- helplessness and desperation
- less ability to love
- less ability to experience pleasure (anhedonia)

Effects on body
- losing sleeping quality (with excessive dreaming) or sleep pattern change
- exhaustion, less energy than usual
- appetite changes, abnormal eating, weight gain or loss
- physical aches and pain without obvious causes
- self harm, suicidal

Depressed people also have visible signs of anxiety like frequent sighing, dry mouth or lapses into unclear language. Physical changes such as palpitations (pounding of heart, sweatiness, trouble catching of breath is called “co-morbid disorder” which is also more commonly recognized as panic attack.
